Moving my blog to Backbeat Magazine

While I am not retiring Ian's Music Blog, I am moving it over to the new Backbeat Magazine website we are currently working on.

I started this blog as a fun way to express my thoughts and opinions about music and concerts. I ended up getting real work as a result of this blog with cdFuse, now Double Stereo, and was offered to take over Austin Vida in the fall of 2008. Do512 made me one of their "All-Stars," an honor I am still flattered about to this day. Long story short, my blog has served its purpose.

Thank you to all that read and supported me. Thank you to those who read and hated or disagreed with what I had to say. It would be a boring world if we all thought the same thing right? A little less indie and bottle service pop music would be nice though.

So please follow me and my good friend AJ Miranda (pictured above) at Backbeat Magazine. We are working hard to make it the publication that fills the void in local coverage that our local artists so desperately need in these changing times (Waller Creek Tunnel Project, noise ordinances, etc). We also want to make Backbeat the magazine that takes Austin and San Antonio more national with a new website. Why should Chicago or the coasts hog all the national media fame?

And of course AJ and I will make sure Latino artists are spotlighted and treated like every other mainstream band or genre. We've never been happy about the Latino coverage, or lack thereof, by other mainstream local blogs and publications. That being said, I am happy to assist and consult. Feel free to reach out.

Red River Noise is now Backbeat Magazine

Yes folks, it is true. I decided to post this video because I am still getting emails and questions about my involvement with Backbeat Magazine and what's happening with Red River Noise. I made this announcement officially at Club de Ville on July 1st. Red River Noise merged with Backbeat Magazine from San Antonio. We will not only be writing for the Backbeat Austin print edition, but also online when we launch the new website. We are currently working on launching that this summer. The first issue drops today at our Block Party on 7th. I can't wait for you all to see it. Click here for the Block Party details.

My role, just so you are clear, is to wear many hats. I'm part owner, national content editor, handle online promotions and will do some writing when time permits or if the mood strikes. This past month during the transition I've been helping with the debut issue, the Block Party planning, setting up video shoots and wrapping up Red River Noise stuff. I do whatever is needed basically. Our Red River Noise staff is also accompanied now by a great team recruited by our current Editor in Chief, Sarah Vasquez, that she brought with her from The Accent.

So as you can see, this is a big task but a worth while endeavor. Austin has needed something like the new Backbeat to continue coverage of national touring acts but also take better care of our local scene. In my opinion, the best thing you can do for your local bands and artists is spotlight them professionally in a National publication that gets readership outside of Austin. The web will make sure of that while the print helps tell their story or spread the word here at home. Reaching San Antonio directly and instantly is pretty cool too, something no other publication in town can claim.

Yes, the word on the street is true. AJ Miranda and I have merged with Backbeat Magazine from San Antonio. We are co-owners and our staff is coming with us from Red River Noise. It's been months in the making and we couldn't be more excited. We are bringing the best in live videos and national content to a organization that already does a stellar job with local coverage in San Antonio. Backbeat Austin is next and we are kicking off the first issue drop with a big block party on 7th Street this Saturday.

You read that right kids! The popular indie-folk band is coming back to Austin for a headlining show on September 13 with Kathleen Edwards. The concert will be at The Long Center for Performing Arts.

Hip hop fans better get familiar with New York based Theophilus London, especially if you have ACL tickets. His video for his new single "Last Name London" not only teaches you how to pronounce his name but also bumps. London is another M.C. to ride this sort of hipster-hop wave that mixes electronic dance music with an old school flare. His debut album, Timez Are Weird These Days, comes out July 19. He will perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live that same night. It seems Theophilus London is going to have a big year.

The Warlocks release 'The Warlocks EXP'

The Warlocks guitarist and vocalist, Bobby Hecksher, recently uploaded an experimental record from The Warlocks vault to the band's badcamp page. The record is called The Warlocks EXP.

Here's what Hecksher said, according to the press release, about The Warlocks EXP album:

"I made this experimental record a few years ago. It's called "The Warlocks EXP" and it was all done in pretty much one day. Pretty much one take. I had been working this idea for a few years but could never get it down right. One day, like magic Syd brought me a hand built Oscillator and I gave the idea another go. Just like that it was all done. I think it came out wonderful. Thank you Syd. Just put the whole thing on and don't think about it. Great for well... err... usage of whatever sort you are into. Dave Katznelson was suppose to put this out on Birdman but the artwork didn't get finished on time. Bummer Dude."

Sharks and Mike Ness perform "Lude Boy" live

This was a rare moment captured on video and I just had to post it for all to see. Punk Rock's Godfather, Mike Ness of Social Distortion, joined Sharks onstage in Virginia recently to perform with them. Why is this a big deal you ask? Mike Ness hasn't performed with anyone for twelve years. The last person was Bruce Springsteen. That is a hell of an endorsement for Sharks.

Sharks is one of the bands I am looking forward to checking out at this year's Warped Tour. The English punk band is a serious up-and-comer in the U.S. punk rock scene and if you don't know them now, you will soon. I'll make sure of it.

Le Butcherettes added to Lollapalooza

Lollapalooza just got better.After a tour with Deftones and an upcoming tour with label mate Tera Melos, the trio will perform at Grant Park for the biggest summer music festival in the land. If you have tickets and travel plans, you should be very excited.

I've seen Le Butcherettes multiple times this year, mostly at South by Southwest and then again at Austin Music Hall when they opened for Deftones and Dillinger Escape Plan. Frontwoman Terri "Gender Bender" is a rock star in the making, if not already.

(6/22) Preview: Suzanna Choffel at Blues On The Green

One of my absolute favorite Austin artists is Suzanna Choffel. Sorry to say this folks, but she is way too good to be local. Count your blessings that she is and that it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to see her live. She often gets compared to Nelly Furtado because she does sound like her, but Choffel is more bluesy and soulful.

Speaking of seeing Choffel live and not costing an arm and a leg, be sure to check out Choffel for free at Blues On The Green (BOTG) on Wednesday, June 22. BOTG happens every summer here in Austin at Zilker Park. It will be hot but well worth it as Bright Light Social Hour open.

Choffel will be performing songs from her new album, Steady Eye Shaky Bow. Get there early as parking is a headache and so are the people further away from the stage who come just "be there" and don't pay attention to the music. I hate sitting and even being around those people and their bad kids. You will want to be up front for this one. Trust me.

(6/30) Rage Against The Machine tribute at Red 7

All my friends know that Rage Against The Machine (RATM) is my all-time favorite band. They have been since I was a teenager.They were group responsible for me taking a real interest in politics. RATM was also the first band to blend hip hop and metal together and get it right. I could go on a fan boy love fest all day, but you get the point. RATM rule.

While they do perform one offs here and there for causes like immigration and whatever else pisses off Zach de La Rocha, the band is no longer the full time entity they once were. So now the tribute era begins...

My friends at Bemba Entertainment have put together "People Of The Sun" at Red 7 on June 30. The line-up consists of some my friends and favorite local/regional bands: Este Vato, Bombasta, Baby Got Bacteria and Higher Than Why. Sure none of them are the original, but it is all about having fun and coming together with other RATM fans. Like the original band, the People Of The Sun tribute will benefit Workers Defense Project and Soul Session ATX.

Get to know Making Movies

Making Movies from Kansas City, Kansas are one of those bands that are really difficult to place or describe to people who don't normally listen to Latin music or Latin Alternative music. First they are bilingual, so there is a problem selling them sometimes. They might not be "Latino" enough for Latinos but still too "ethnic" for mainstream fans to understand or enjoy. I thought this sort of logic or mentality was a thing of the past, but as chief of two websites for both audiences, I see that this is still the case.

The story of Making Movies is an interesting one. You can learn more about them from an interview we did on Austin Vida here. I've had them on the last three Austin Vida/Bemba showcases and they are just impressive live. They fuse together indie rock, alternative and of course traditional Latin rhythms to create a unique sound that is their own. I hope they continue to tour, write music and eventually catch a big break. It's been a pleasure getting to know these guys and I will be bringing them back to Austin later on. I only hope more people will take notice.

Arguably Mexico's biggest female pop star, Venegas striped down her normal live show arrangement to just an accordion, her voice and one other musician joining her.

The Boxing Lesson are Austin's self-proclaimed "space rockers" that have been flooding my inbox for the past few years thanks to a relentless work ethic and a nose to the grind publicist. They are more of a psychedelic rock band than anything, but they do incorporate electronic elements into their music. They also do a good job incorporating progressive rock breakdowns. Lastly, lead singer Paul Waclawsky looks like he's the lost older brother of actor Ryan Reynolds.

All kidding aside, The Boxing Lesson are coming out with a new EP, Muerta.They are streaming Muerta on their bandcamp page. Listen to the Muerta EP below:

Zlam Dunk are one of my favorite bands. I've followed them avidly since their early days. It still baffles me that they aren't bigger than they are or kicking everyone's ass on Warped Tour. Only youth, talent and a shit ton of energy drinks can birth such a high energy group of dance punks like these dudes.

Currently Zlam Dunk is in the running for The Recording Conservatory of Austin's 5th Annual Unsigned Artist Competition. The winner gets 100 free studio hours, a bunch of recording gear from Guitar Center, and a show at Stubb's in front of some industry professionals.

Voting ends on May 19. While there are a few other good bands amongst a bunch of not so good ones, Zlam Dunk is the clear choice in terms of being ready, worthy and marketable for the next level. I haven't really endorsed any bands in contests like this before, but since I work for myself I can do and say whatever I want. I'm Ian Morales and I proudly endorse Zlam Dunk. Best soundtrack I've heard in a while: "Californication: Season 4"

I was sent this a while back and I am kicking myself for not getting into it sooner. I normally don't care much for soundtracks of shows or movies I don't care for. That combined with my lack of time these days let things slip by sometimes. Don't let this one slip by you.

The Californication: Season 4 soundtrack is ear candy for my fellow early thirty-something, Generation Xers. Not only does Better Than Ezra cover "So Alive" by Love and Rockets but the soundtrack includes tracks like Tommy Lee’s solo version of “Home Sweet Home." Other artists I like on the soundtrack include Eagles of Death Metal, Cracker and Monster Magnet.

What caught me by surprise were three rock covers from the show’s on-screen band Queens of Dogtown. The band is fronted by Zoë, daughter to Lenny. They cover and soften up one of my favorite power ballads, "I Remember You" by Skid Row, but it's a good cover. You have consider Zoë is only in her early twenties here folks. Check out the video for their other stand out cover, "Would" from the legendary Alice In Chains.

Joe Sib's performs "California Calling: A Story Of Growing Up Punk Rock"

Joe Sib is one of my favorite music personalities. He is co-owner of record label Side One Dummy Records, Wax frontman, and host of punk rock radio show "Complete Control" which airs in seven cities across the country including Austin alternative station 101X on Sunday nights.

Sib is now performing a new one man stand-up/variety act California Calling: A Story Of Growing Up Punk Rock-a performance piece about his love of music and growing up in California. He'll also be a part of the 13th annual Punk Rock Bowling tournament in Las Vegas which I wish would happen in Austin just once in my life (ahem, Transmission?).

Rival Schools have enlisted Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys to do a remix of their song “69 Guns.” What more do you need to know?

The Young Things are a New York City based band who first met in London. They have this sort of throw back garage-pop sound that I can see a lot of people liking. Bloggers will buzz about this band if they aren't already.

Following the release of their debut EP, …Is The Killer, the band has created a cool introductory debut video for their single “All My Friends Are Junkies”. The video highlights each member of the band in the colored blocks of the old electronic game Simon. I was pretty good at Simon.

San Francisco based rapper K. Fly released her new music video for her single "Doctor Don't Know" last week on YouTube. This artist has grown on me. I've picked up her free mixtapes off of her website and have really enjoyed them on my ride to work in the mornings. She's like Missy only white and sort of hipster.

K. Fly (government name = Kristine Flaherty) will be releasing another mixtape on April 29. Be sure and lookout for that. Watch the video for "Doctor Don't Know" below:

My favorite SXSW 2011 discovery: Adebisi Shank

A lot of people have either asked me in person or emailed me about what I saw at South by Southwest this past March. I never got around to answering those emails because I just get really busy sometimes. My apologies to those who emailed, but I'll answer the question in this post for everyone.

Given that I have been to every South by Southwest every year (16 years now) since I've lived in Austin/Round Rock, and I'm "in the biz" so to to speak, very little impresses me anymore when it comes to music. Sure I like new bands in various genres here and there, but very few make me go absolutely "ape shit" anymore. Last year at South by I went crazy for an Irish band called The Minutes. This year the Irish impress me once again with a couple of bands, but Adebisi Shank blew me away.

Watch: "Ode To The Bouncers" by Studio Killers

Studio Killers are an electronic music collective comprised of Cherry, Goldie Foxx and Dyna Mink - virtually based in East London. I recently googled them after I saw their cool new animated music video for "Ode To The Bouncer".

"Ode To The Bouncer" is the first single from Studio Killers. The song's inception came about when the producer/DJ duo Foxx and Mink started hunting a vocal topline for one of their backing tracks and their manager, the heavy weight Bipolar Bear, sent the track off to the illusive songwriter, Cherry. Everyone that came into contact with the resulting song thought it was a smash, and the lead vocals haunted them with the question: "Who's that girl?"

Preview: The Rumble Austin (April edition)

The Rumble Austin showcase series is a great way to hear local bands for FREE. This is what the non-Red River rats and Austin scenesters need to take advantage of. I'm not a fan of every local band here in Austin, but the ones I do love I discovered during Free Week (an entire week in January of free shows) and at other various low cost or free shows. Headlining the April showcase is Austin psych-blues-alt (whatever) rockers The Bridge Farmers. The group is playing in support of their newest 6 song EP, Din of Celestial Birds. I'm no fan of Kobe by any means, but props to him for being the best player in the game and his own empire. Can't knock the hustle for real. Recently I saw Bryant in this Chinese hip hop video that's been circulating around the blogs and "Facey Spaces".

Many of you younglings out there may not know this, but Kobe is no stranger to music videos. I remember him rapping (yes, you read that correctly) in a Brian McKnight video back in the '90s. I posted both videos for you to check out.

I found this group in my iTunes downloads from last year and am kicking myself for not having listened to Heavy Young Heathens earlier. White Mystery are a brother and sister garage rock duo from Chicago. I have their self-titled debut and am really looking forward to their new album coming out in April, Blood and Venom. Currently there aren't any scheduled tour stops in Austin, but I'm sure they will come back around to play Beerland again this year.

It's hard to believe this is the same young woman I met at Warped Tour just a few years back. I am not a big fan or anything, but Perry makes good pop music. I was impressed with her new video for her single "E.T." with Kan-yeezy.

Cake debuted a new video today on MTV's website. The video is for their second single off of Showroom of Compassion called "Long Time". It was surprising to learn it was an animated video. The group collaborated with Callicore Films, a French production company that has an an art studio that focuses on CG Art and a self-proclaimed resistance against "the cultural dictatorship of media". Cake is very anti-lots of things so it is a good fit. The video is basically a story of a vagabond and his monkey. Monkeys rule.

The other surprise was that this U.K. based indie star in the making is not old enough to legally buy beer here in the U.S. I got wind of the band as I was looking through the countless number of bands coming to South by Southwest. If The Good Natured don't make it big after SXSW, I'd be shocked.

Camilo Lara, also known as Mexican Institute of Sound, is one of my absolute favorite Latin Alternative artists. Other than maybe the dudes from Nortec Collective and a select few (very few) others, no one mixes traditional Mexican sounds with dance music better. Check out the video above if you don't have it playing already.

Aside from being a talented musician/producer, Lara has an amazing vinyl record collection of over 45,000 records. In an interview he did with Austin Vida in 2009, he said the first record he ever bought was a Quiet Riot record. Can you believe it? Quiet 'fucking' Riot. Awesome.

I get really excited when I hear a new hip hop artist I like. I'm such a backpacker snob when it comes to my hip hop.I can't help it. Hip Hop was the best in the '90s when I was really absorbing the genre and it has never been the same for me since. Sure I like a few artists here and there like Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Shad, Notar and a select few others, but it is too few and far between. I hate to sound old and bitter, but the accessible hip hop these kids now grow up hearing on the radio and BET these days is just dumbed down crap made for ringtone sales.

That being said, I get gem or two emailed to me now and then. The latest find for me this time is a D.C. rapper named Wale, pronounced like "Wall-A". I'm sure he's been around the underground and East Coast scene a while but that doesn't help me hear it down here in Austin. I like Wale's music because it sounds like where he is from. Washington D.C. has long been known for that go-go music influence and I have always loved it. That go-go sound is what made me tolerate that old Beyonce song "Crazy In Love". Combine that with his sick flow, unique voice and dope lyrics and you have Wale.

Tactics is the side project of Brett Thorne and Ross Bennet from Zlam Dunk. I saw this video online today from their first show back in December at Mohawk. Damn I wish I would have gone. Not only were they playing on the same bill as This Will Destroy You (f*cking epic!) but Tactics actually sounds good. I need a record and to check them out.

In the interest of full disclosure, Brett Thorne is a friend of mine. That being said, our friendship has zero influence on my opinions of the bands he plays in. In fact, if I thought they sucked I'd have a blast teasing him about it. Trust me, I would and I'd be really mean.

He's a good musician, songwriter and singer. Tonight is a rare opportunity to see him doing his soul thing. He performs at the 12:30am spot after Wendy Colonna and Dave Madden. Yeah it is a little bit late, but his soul music is perfect for ending the night. Take your lady for a night cap and then go home and make babies. (1/4) Red River Noise Free Week Showcase 2011 at The Parish

While Red River Noise is not yet a year old, my crew and I made some serious headway in 2010. We debuted with a an epic day party during South By Southwest that had both Zlam Dunk and Bright Light Social Hour on the bill. We offered media sponsorships to various local shows, including those put on by Giant Steps and Adi Anand. Now, we are back at it this week for Austin's own little local music festival of sorts, Free Week.

This year we went "off the river" to one of my favorite venues in Austin, The Parish. During a cold January, it is nice to have an indoor venue that is not only warm, but has epic sound and lighting. Shows at The Parish always look great in photos and the twenties style speakeasy aesthetic looks great.

We have put together a pretty good little indie showcase for this year's Free Week Showcase. From the very beginning of our Free Week discussion, my friend/ business partner Ajay Miranda and I wanted to include STEREO IS A LIE. Ajay was the one who really got me into SIAL. When we first started hanging out and talked about our favorite local bands, they were one of his top favorites. After watching them on one of his videos and seeing them live at Emo's one day, I could understand why. SIAL is one of the few Austin based bands that is ready to jump to the next level on a national scale that hasn't yet done so. They recently signed with Monolathe Recordings and their debut is due out in February. We're happy to have them on board as our headliner as this will kick off a big year for them. Another band on the bill I'm excited to have perform is New Roman Times. I think they are a good compliment to SIAL and have a good sound. To be honest, I have only caught them twice and have yet to see them at a venue where the sound was good. It will be cool to actually hear them at The Parish, like really hear them. They are another group that has the slick but raw sounding indie that the local blogger kids seem to love. I like them because they sound like something I would have heard on MTV back in the eighties. Check them out on this video of them performing an in-store at Waterloo Records:

Our Free Week showcase will mark the first time I finally get to see Austin based indie group, MoTelAviv. I have seen their name many times listed around town and have heard their music online. It is just one of those things where my day job, busy media schedule and array of live music choices got in the way of me seeing them live. Ajay is the one who actually recommended we get them to play our showcase. I was more than down for that as it would give me the chance to see them live and at The Parish. After all, seeing new bands or bands you haven't seen live is one reason people need to get out of the house during Free Week. Discovering something or someone new is fun folks. While we are on the subject of discovering, we have Final Exam opening the show. They had the night booked already before we booked the rest of the line up with The Parish folks, so we ran with it. In the spirit of Free Week and supporting local music, I am looking forward to checking them out.

Again, this is a week when I can actually check out new up-and-coming bands in the indie world. All the blogger, bleet-up type folks who seem to think they run the online indie circles in this town are what keep me from going to a lot of these shows. They are nice folks for the most part by themselves, but in a group setting it is one big "look at me and how cool I am" fest. I'm about the music and enjoying myself, not the ostentatios scene crap that goes with it all at times. Our Red River Noise Free Week showcase is about showcasing quality music for people and of course, marketing the brand name a little. That's the game right?

Point blank it is the best show happening on January 4 and you will be warm if nothing else. I've frozen my ass off at Mohawk, Beauty Bar and Red 7 many a nights during Free Week over the years. It will be nice to be warm for once and not have to leave after one good band finishes. This is one night where indie lovers will not have to venue hop and can stay put all night. My New Year's Eve tradition

I'm blessed to live in Austin, Texas. I've been here since '95 and have no plans on leaving anytime soon. One of the many things I love about Austin is obviously the live music scene. More importantly to me, the Latin music scene we have here. Despite my love for the incredible and amazing Maneja Beto and David Garza, Grupo Fantasma has ruled the scene for ten years now. I have zero problem with that. No one smashes harder than Grupo.

For the past few years, it has become a tradition for Grupo Fantasma to play here on New Year's Eve. Last year they performed at Mohawk and the at The Parish the year before. This year, Grupo's show is even bigger as it is at La Zona Rosa and with Austin's hip happening soul band, Black Joe & The Honeybears. I have my tickets thank goodness, as it is probably sold out by now. I hope you got your tickets.

Even if you missed out on your chance to spend NYE with Grupo, you should be at one of the many other great live shows happening here in Austin. Cake is at The Austin Music Hall. The Sword, the world's best metal band not named Metallica, will be ripping faces off at Mohawk. Cheer Up Charlie's has a great local band showcase that gives you the most bang for your buck. Oh, and Lady Tron will be at Seaholm Power Plant. That's just to name a few. My friends at Do512 have a great list for you here if you still have no idea what to do tomorrow night.

I was watching some early Entourage episodes tonight and then came across this video someone emailed me. I was glad to see it. I've had a download of Saigon's album for a while but haven't really heard much about him since. He is still one of the few rapper's out there who I think can lead us out of this new movement of ringtone rap and back into an era of lyrical, content driven hip hop. I also think most rap is soft now too, so it's nice to hear something intelligent with a rough edge. Check the video...he's rapping about some real tough subjects.

Monte Negro is one of my all time favorite bands, Latin and non.Their sound is completely original but comfortably familiar. They are indie, but edgier. Even better, they are Latino. Well, Jason (guitar) is Japanese but that makes the group's make up even cooler. He's also one of the best guitarists I've seen. Monte Negro are semi-big in the Latin Alternative world and are certainly ready to blow up in the mainstream indie world. Take notice folks. Hip hop is supposed to be urban poetry put to music. When I was growing up hip hop was hungry, raw and had something real to say. Somewhere along the line it lost its edge. Changing styles, trends coming and going, the internet, ringtone sales, etc have all changed the game. I hate to admit it, but I stopped listening to most hip hop that came out after the year 2000.

One thing I noticed is how the West Coast presence diminished in main stream radio hip hop and magazines. The only West Coast artists getting love were the mega stars like Snoop, Cypress Hill, The Game and a few select others. It is not a long list.

Well the other day I was checking out my reader and scanning through the various music blogs and websites I follow when I came across a music video from West Coast rapper, Jay Rock. The music video is for his single "Diary Of A Broke Nigga" which also featuresKendrick Lamar and Giddy. I just wanted to share it with you all because it is one of the few hip hop songs I've been excited about this year.

Looking for something cool to check out this weekend? Let me suggest checking out Cincinnati indie rockers, Pomegranates, at Mohawk. Given that Cincinnati was the city I lived in before moving to here in '95, I have a special place in my heart for their bands, the Reds and of course Skyline Chili. While it is no secret indie isn't my genre of choice, I do find myself liking a small handful of bands from time to time, especially after going through the over abundance of press releases I get on a daily basis. These guys caught my hear some how and I think indie lovers will dig them.

Don't let the cool weather keep you inside this weekend as this will be at Mohawk's indoor stage according to their official website. Playing before Pomegranates will be Oh No Oh My and A Tiger Named Lovesick. Get there by 9:00pm to catch the entire show.

The Sword reschedule U.S. tour dates

I'm excited and super disappointed at the same time right now.When Austin based metal group, The Sword, announced that original drummer Trevitt Wingo was leaving the band, it was heart breaking. After catching them at ACL, their final show with Wingo, they announced he was leaving. Shortly thereafter, they found a replacement drummer.

Kevin Fender, best known for his work with the Texas hardcore outfit Employer, Employee, will be their drummer now. While I'm glad they will continue on, their new tour dates do not include any Austin gigs. Oh well, they will be back at some point. Here are the new U.S. tour dates:

I guess he dug his head out the sand pit of shame (Taylor Swift incident) and resurfaced with a new video. I have to be honest....I can't stand Kanye but his music is dope. He's the arguably the best artist of our time. I'm diggin' this mini-movie meets music video concept. You need a good 34 minutes to watch this though, and that isn't always easy to do on a computer screen. Plug your laptop or desk top into your TV and couch it for this one. This should get a big buzz going and sell tons of copies of the new album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Like any other Friday night in Austin, there are so many amazing live shows to pick from. This Friday night though, is especially heavy. Choices ranging from The Gorrillaz at The Frank Erwin Center to Stone Temple Pilots at The Backyard will force music lovers to choose between many of their favorites. If you are looking to get out and avoid all that touring act and stadium show craziness, then you should head over to Ruta Maya on South Congress. They seem to have a good party going on that celebrates some of the best local blues, funk and soul.

Ruta Maya has been one of my favorite local venues in the past few years, especially since they moved from downtown to South Congress. I love how it is out of the way from downtown, sells food, non-alcoholic drinks and has a great new sound system. It is a venue unlike any other in town and now they have a new booking manager. I have already seen the changes in what they are trying to do, the first sign being a Leatherbag residency on Thursdays. Friday night they are throwing a soul party with Lisa Marshall, Dertybird and Soul Track Mind. The line up is a mix of southern rock style blues and old school soul. It is not an everyday showcase although those musical genres can be found here in Austin.

Doors open at 8:00pm. The cover is $10, which I think is a little high for this sort of local show. Still, I know local musicians don't make a lot of money on shows and have to split the door amongst all the performers. I hope it does well which is why I chose to spotlight it here on my blog. Many outside of Austin don't see Austin as a "salsa town." That is true in terms of salsa bands maybe, but not when it comes to salsa music lovers and the amount of salsa dancers we have here. That is why my crew and I at Austin Vida, together with DJ Orion and The Parish, have put together a salsa happy hour tomorrow night. DJ Orion is one of the few DJs I know with a good salsa collection and the good taste not to play any newer, poppier salsa. Him and I see eye to eye when it comes to our love of old school Fania Records classics and obscure salseros from records our parents have tucked away that no one has ever really heard of. We did this once already with mild success and his set was fantastic.

The other details include $3.50 drink specials for my favorite alcoholic drink, the mojito. It is an early evening event so working folks, such as myself, aren't dragging Wednesday morning at work. The Parish is a beautiful room with an epic sound system right smack in the middle of 6th street. My favorite part is the no frills, everyone 21+ is welcome vibe. Salsa can get a little too uppity in this town for my likings sometimes, but not at our Mi Gente events. Come as you are, be yourself and listen to some of the best in classic salsa. It's just a cool hangout with a good setting and good people. I hope to see you there.

Big Boi to play Eastside Drive-In this Saturday (post-poned!!!)

Outkast's Big Boi is coming to Austin this weekend to play a big show at the new Eastside Drive-In located at 1001 East 6th Street. Local promoters Knuckle Rumbler and Transmission Entertainment teamed up to put this together. I'm stoked.

This will be this weekend's biggest event and quite a show. Local DJ crews Peligrosa and Table Manners will be going record to record in a bad ass DJ showcase of sorts. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Buy them online through Frontgate Tickets here.

Brooklyn "etherealists" School Of Seven Bells are in town for a headlining show at Mohawk. This is one of the indie bands I actually listen to and like. Their style of indie is very mellow without being folky or weird. They have a unique sound with a lot of sound effects and melodies going on all at once, but they totally make it work. I do have to be in the mood to listen to them, but their music is relaxing. I bet they are good live. you should o check them out tonight if you are looking for something to do because you didn't get tickets to any of the ACL after-shows. Remember her from the Super Bowl commercials during 2007? I didn't until I saw her video on YouTube again for "Message From Your Heart" the other day. She is Kina Grannis and she will be performing at Stubb's tonight. Hear this fellas...

Grannis's poppy, singer-songwriter style is perfect for taking out your non-Red River girlfriends who shop at The Domain and like Hallmark Valentine's Day cards. It is not exactly a dude friendly genre or sound, but take the time out from being a bro or hipster douche and go with her to see something she will actually like.

Ladies hear this...

Your date, boyfriend, husband, etc will sit through this concert with you. Kina is gorgeous and can actually sing, despite the Hallmark card style content of the lyrics. She is what guys refer to as "attainably hot." I know that isn't even a word, but we use it to describe an above average girl next door type who we mistakingly believe would go out with us. Chances are, guys won't like her music but won't mind the show. Take advantage.

Sponge returns to Austin

Long live the '90s!!!! Sponge is coming to Austin to play a show at Red Eyed Fly this Thursday.This is one of the most underrated bands of the early '90s. I discovered them in middle school on a random visit to CD Warehouse one day (remember those?) in the used section. I picked up the album Rotting Pinata for the title and popped it into the CD players they used to have out at these listening stations. I instantly fell in love with it. Later I heard them in the movie Chasing Amy and haven't heard much from them since. Still, Rotting Pinata is one my top one hundred lists for best albums of all time.

I didn't think I'd ever get to see Sponge in concert, but now I get to sort of see them. The lead singer, Vinnie Dombroski, is the only original member. Still, I'm so there. Still wondering who Sponge is or can't remember who they are? Listen to "Plowed" here from the YouTube clip. It's a classic:
