A lot of people have either asked me in person or emailed me about what I saw at South by Southwest this past March. I never got around to answering those emails because I just get really busy sometimes. My apologies to those who emailed, but I'll answer the question in this post for everyone.
I'm as intrigued as I am weirded out. I came across this video when looking around for something else. This band is called Rubberbandits and are from Limerick, Ireland. It's a comedy duo, not to be taken ssoooo seriously. Although, I do want one of those masks now...
My favorite new discovery at this year's South By Southwest festival was Irish rock band, The Minutes.They are three piece, no frills rock and roll throwback of sorts that kick ass live. Of course I follow them on Facebook and came across the video posted above of lead singer and guitarist, Mark Austin, playing acoustic. I had not seen anything acoustic from them yet so I thought I'd share this with you guys. They were part of this year's Oxygen line up and already got a positive review. More positive things are in store for them once their record comes out this fall. A vinyl for yours truly would be good. So during SXSW, I try and check out as many international bands as I can. I don't get caught in the all the hype of the free booze hipster parties. I look for music or bands that I will only get a chance to see at SXSW. Everyone else as far as popular bands always make their way back around to Austin at some point so I don't sweat missing them at South By.
Well this past March during SXSW, my favorite new discovery, meaning a band even I hadn't yet learned about or heard of, was The Minutes from Dublin, Ireland. They are three piece Irish rock machine that resurrects the spirit of the 60s when rock and roll was raw. They took me by complete surprise by how good they were live and I can't wait for them to stamp a vinyl for me to add o my High Fidelity collection. Check out The Minutes here. The last show for me this week...Sunday Bloody Sunday at Mi Casa Tamales & Cantina on 6th street. This is another good international showcase put on by my good friends at Dart International. I don't honestly know about most of the bands on the bill, but that's part of the fun for me is the potential to discover something cool or different that I wouldn't see everyday here in Austin. I do know I want to see The Minutes and Butterfly Explosion from Ireland. Details are on the poster and on this LINK. See you there.
It looks like I may be at the Hipster hangout known as The Scoot Inn this Friday. Ireland's We Should Be Dead come back for another Austin appearance for Dart International . Also on the bill are Austin garage punk rockers, Black Panda. The shows benefits my friend Dave Dart's organization dedicated to bring all of us music lovers international bands to play for us.
I got to meet and interview We Should Be Dead this past march at South By Southwest. I was hoping they'd be back soon. I caught them at the Dart showcase at Roux and really dug their indie pop sound. Go check them out if you're not doing anything and judge for yourself. I think you'll have a good time.
We Should Be Dead is an Irish pop band now living in Los Angeles. I interviewed them here in Austin during South By Southwest (SXSW) in March. Their music reminded so much of the old Go-Go’s albums I listened to as a kid, only slightly grittier in sound. We talked about coming together back in Limerick, relationship lyrics and even marriage proposals in Alpine,Texas. We Should Be Dead is a group you should definitely give a listen to and get to know.
Ian is a graduate of Round Rock High School and attended St Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. In 2008 he joined the team at Double Stereo (formerly CD Fuse) as their Blog editor where he reviewed concerts, albums, and did interviews for the popular music site.In January 2009, he became the Editor in Chief for Austin Vida. In 2010, with the help of some of his most talented friends, he launched Red River Noise. "Ian's Music Blog" is also one of the few blogs selected to be a Do512 All-Star.
