This week the best show in town is clearly this one here. It's at one of my favorite venues and it is FREE! You need to make sure you RSVP and come early. The real treat is going to be Pinata Protest, as they haven't played too many shows in Austin. That will change this year, but it all starts for them Wednesday. My friends Este Vato are new to the scene, but will definietly keep your attention. My friends and I caught them at Trophy's recently and liked what we heard. I don't have to tell you about headliner Girl in a Coma. I will say that if you haven't seen them before, then this is your best opportunity to check them out. They're amazing. By the way.... it's free. Did I mention it's free?
If you're in Austin, it is very unlikely that you haven't heard of The Black and White Years. They are a popular indie rock, new wave style band. You may have seen them on the cover of local music grab and go magazines, or heard them on local alternative rock radio station. I have not been too crazy about their music, although I clearly see why people like them. They have a cool style and I heard they are good live. One thing I do like, is their new video for their song, "Zeroes and Ones".
Thursday night Austin based rock en Espanol band, Kalua, made the best of the situation they were given. They were supposed to play with Austin rock favorite, Vallejo, at Pangaea for the Pangaea Live! series. After Vallejo’s lead singer, AJ Vallejo, suffered a mild heart attack Wednesday, the show at Pangaea was obviously canceled.
One of my favorite rappers, Rob G, is going to be in town this week with a fellow Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth. You can catch him in Round Rock or Austin, depending on your schedule and location. I can't wait to hear the album, "Both Sides of the Fence". I was wondering what Rob G was up to since I last heard from him.
On February 19, they will be at Piranha Records in Round Rock at 6:30.
On February 20, they will be at Music Mania at 5:00.
This blog goes out to my friends really, but if you are on Last FM feel free to hit me up. Last FM is a social music site that exposes to the world what it is you listen to from your computer. It also has cool radio stations that you can create or that it automatically customizes to your tastes based on what you already listen to. I love it and have used it for a while now, but only six of my friends use it. The fun part other than discovering new music from your friends is making fun of what they listen to. Are there any other music bloggers in Austin out there who use it? I am looking to see what other influential music aficionados are listening to.
If you are in a band and you don't have a Last FM profile, you need to get on it. It is as easy as adding stuff to Wikipedia. You should also have a Last FM button on your myspace page or a link to your Last FM profile on your Facebook fan page.
The Boxing Lesson is an Austin based rock band that could very well be the bastard love child of Pink Floyd and any indie rock band. Over the past year they have become an Austin staple of sorts, playing everything from Free Week to weekend gigs at Emo’s. They have gotten a lot of buzz and press around town, but all the Pink Floyd references had always kept me from being interested. After seeing them live for the first time at Antone’s recently, I finally got a hold of their album..
Boerne, Texas's own Hacienda will be appearing tonight on Late Night with Conan O'Brien as Dan Auerbach's (The Black Keys) backing band. You can catch Late Night on Austin's NBC affiliate, KXAN at 11:30 central time. Do check it out if you're staying in tonight. For all you attending SXSW this year, it will be a preview of what you can see in March if you are one of the fortunate ones who can get in to that show.
Tonight's show at Pangaea is canceled due to AJ Vallejo suffering a mild heart attack Wednesday. Opening band, Kalua, is moved to Beso Cantina, located at 307 B West 5th St. The show will be free and Kalua will be giving away DVDs of their new Video, Volvere. Kalua goes on at 10:30 and Automatic Cycle opens up. The Vallejo show at Pangaea will be rescheduled. I will share that info here and on Austin Vida once that becomes available.
The BMX DJ duo is no stranger to Austin. I caught them hanging around after SXSW last year at the Gogol Bordello concert on St Patrick’s Day. They were walking around with bicycle helmets with wheels spinning on top of them. That alone should have tipped me off that these guys were different. Monareta is returning to Austin for SXSW again this year. Be on the lookout for them, as their show is not one you want to miss. For those of you who are strangers to Monareta, read and learn why Monareta's Picotero is one of the coolest albums I own.
Visit Austin Vida to check out DJ 2DQ talking about the switch from The Beat to Hot 93, Pangaea Live, Vinyl Dharma on MTV2, Puerto Rican punk rockers, reviews, sports talk with Dennis De La Pena and more.
San Antonio's own Hacienda will be performing on February 6th at The Mohawk in Austin for the second annual Fashion Freakout. This rock and roll fashion show...
