Watch: "Jackie Come Lately" by Heavy Young Heathens

I think this is the next vinyl album (or two) that I'm going to purchase. I found this group in my iTunes downloads from last year and am kicking myself for not having listened to Heavy Young Heathens earlier. The video I posted above debuted on MTV Hive last year and I never got a chance to post/share. Better late than never.

If you like what you hear, Heavy Young Heathens have free mp3s on their website here.

Preview: Thunder Buffalo at Trailer Space Records

Seattle based indie garage rockers, Thunder Buffalo, will performing at Trailer Space Records on Saturday, September 18th at 4pm in support of their recently released self-titled album. Thunder Buffalo is the dream child of guitarist/vocalist Aaron Schroeder, who after signing to Sarathan Records and taking the Seattle music scene by storm, is on the road to perform in true DIY fashion, anywhere and everywhere - and as many times possible; from parks and parking lots to house parties and in-stores all in an effort to share his music and his dream. Kudos to them for paying dues and grinding it out.Give them a listen and check them out if your heart so desires.

New Interview with Hacienda on Austin Vida

Hacienda live at Pachanga Fest (photo by Mari Hernandez)

My boys from Boerne, Texas (right outside of San Antonio) came through Austin to perform at this year's Pachanga Festival on May 22nd. I sat down with them again to talk about their new life, new album and San Antonio. Their new album, Big Red & Barbacoa, is the bees knees. It is actually stamped on red vinyl for those of you who are also vinyl junkies. Check out the interview on Austin Vida here:

Win Free Tickets to Pachanga Fest from Austin Vida

The big event is this Saturday at Fiesta Gardens. Pachanga is the it Latino event that happens in this Latin Music Month here in Austin. Pachanga is the only festival to feature Latino musicians of all music genres, where as in other cities they stick to one genre, typically just salsa, Tejano or Latin Alternative. With Pachanga Fest, you can hear great modern rock, punk, cumbia, Tejano, salsa and indie. It is a truly unique and memorable experience that everyone can enjoy.

That being said, my friends and I at Austin Vida are giving away tickets this week through our Austin Vida Facebook fan page. How dope would it be to go to one of the best music festivals in the country for free? It could happen. All you have to do is add or "like" Austin Vida on Facebook to get more details and be eligible to win. Add Austin Vida on Facebook here:

It's a Mohawk Weekend: J. Tillman and Cursive

Fleet Foxes drummer, J. Tillman, is coming through Austin Friday night to do his solo thing at The Mohawk. The interest in Tillman is obviously The Fleet Foxes connection, but he has actually had solo stuff before joining Fleet Foxes. He music is more along the lines of indie singer-songwriter with a bluesy touch. It's definitely not something I could listen to while in traffic, but definitely when relaxing at home. His Year in the Kingdom album is a must have for not only Fleet Foxes fans, but anyone who loves good indie-folk stuff. Other than maybe A.A. Bondy, it is my favorite indie-folk album released this year.

Saturday at Mohawk marks the return one of my favorite bands of all time, Cursive, back to Austin. They haven't been here since SXSW in March. I wasn't sure they would make it back around this way, but they're coming Saturday. Their latest record, Mama I'm Swollen, is their best since The Ugly Organ. I reviewed it earlier in the year for Double Stereo, and don't have anything negative to say about it. That review turned several of my friend into Cursive fans, and they were people who I wouldn't have guessed would be into it. It just goes to show good music is good music, and that is all that matters sometimes.

Opening for Cursive is their touring mate, Capgun Coup. I know little of the band, but look forward to checking them out after listening to some of their music. It's like indie meets surf rock or garage. Speaking of listening to music, check out the latest video from Cursive. It's for their song "Let Me Up" off their current album, Mama I'm Swollen.

New Spoon Album in January

Spoon

Austin's own indie rock Gods, Spoon, will be releasing a new album on January 26th entitled Transference. The album will be put out by Merge Records and will consist of eleven new songs. Finally! I love me some Spoon but their last EP, Got Nuffin, didn't give me my much needed Spoon fix that I though it would. It was okay, but I expect better from Spoon. Here's a video teaser from Spoon's YouTube Channel. I like what I hear...

Transference Track Listings:
1. Before Destruction
2. Is Love Forever?
3. The Mystery Zone
4. Who Makes Your Money
5. Written in Reverse
6. I Saw the Light
7. Trouble Comes Running
8. Goodnight Laura
9. Out Go the Lights
10. Got Nuffin
11. Nobody Gets Me But You

"Preludio" by Telaranas Y Telaperros

Telaranas y Telaperros

Telaranas y Telaperros are a talented young indie band originally from Atlanta, Georgia who are now based in Dallas, Texas. According to their bio, their influences lie with Joy Division, Silvio Rodriguez, and old Spanish Literature. In fact their band’s name comes from a line in the popular Pablo Neruda poem, Testamento de Otono. That alone should tell you that they see things, hear things, and think differently than most.

They are currently working on new material due out this fall. I absolutely love this band and regret not having discovered them sooner. For those of you who do not understand Spanish, fear not. They do sing in English as well, but their music is definitely capable of crossing over into English language markets. This is the kind of music Pitchfork and Paste Magazine are made of.

Thursday Night show pick: The Lemurs at Mohawk

Let the indie hipsterdom ensue at Mohawk tonight. Austin's own The Lemurs and Louisiana's Giver's will be gracing the stage. I admit, I know nothing about Givers other than what was on their Myspace page. Apparently it is a collaboration of several Louisiana improv musicians who look straight out of the pages of American Apparel or the Urban Outfitters catalog. Their music sounds interesting though and I'd be curious to hear it live. The female lead singer, Tif Lamson, sounds very soulful and out of place in a lo-fi indie pop band like this.

The Lemurs

What I can tell you is that The Lemurs are a Red River favorite here in the indie circles. Having been featured on M.E. TV here in Austin and just about all the ad rag grab and go papers I can think of, The Lemurs are not short on local exposure. It's for good reason, as their live show is worth seeing. I don't think their album sounds as good as their live show, but Million Little Bits is a good pick up for anyone. Let me suggest that you make the pretentious vinyl purchase which come with the mp3 downloads. There is still no better way to listen to music than on vinyl. Tonight, The Lemurs at Mohawk is the best show in town. Give a listen to this great clip of their song "My Definition" from their M.E. Live taping.

The Lemurs will perform on the inside stage after the outside show, Cracker and Clem Snide. The Mohawk is located on 912 Red River and the inside show with Givers and The Lemurs starts around 11:55.

Maneja Beto: More Than Just My Friday Concert Pick

I really don't even know where to begin when it comes to talking about one of my favorite bands ever, Maneja Beto. They aren't an internationally signed, although they should be. They are from right here in Austin, although that wasn't my first guess when I saw them for the first time at ACL Fest in 2005. They don't sound like anyone else, known or local. That's what I love about them. They truly are an original in every sense of the word. I feel at times, they might even be ahead of their time. They sound so far evolved from most Latin radio music out today. It is as if they took the best from traditional Latin music, indie, jazz, electronica and rock and created a completely new genre.

Every time I'd have people listen to their music or bring them to one of their shows, they gained a new fan. It didn't matter of it was one of my hipster classmates from St. Ed's or my mother even. They were all impressed. From 2005 to about summer 2008, they were always around. Their normal spots were Club DeVille, Mohawk, etc. I always took them for granted and didn't realize it until they went on a small break, or what I refer to as their "hiatus" last year. It was weird not seeing them around.

Well this year they made their return at Austin' s best new festival, Pachanga Fest at Fiesta Gardens in May. Everything suddenly felt normal again, only this time I wanted to make a point to use my editorial power to do everything I could to help them succeed. I want so badly for them to "make it" and never take another break. I know that sounds rather "fanboy" of me, but so be it. I'd never say that on anything but my blog, but it's all true. They're such talented dudes and their members play in other great bands around town, including Mitote, The Escondido Project, Mice and Rifles and Pack Of Wolves.

I want you all to get to know them and hear them live. I want you all to buy or download their albums. First and foremost, I want you all to go check them out live tonight as they play at The Mohawk with a DJ Chorizo Funk, Black Cock, and a great band from San Antonio, Bombasta. Doors open at nine. Get there early. You'll love Mohawk if you haven't been before.

Oh yeah...I almost forgot. We (Austin Vida) just launched and uploaded a new video interview with all the guys from Maneja Beto which you can now view on the home page. You get the story behind the name, the reason for their "hiatus", and get to hear from them how they craft their sound. Before you view that, check out this live clip we shot at Stubb's this summer.

A Great Night For Indie In Austin

Tonight one of my favorite new local indie bands, Western Ghost House, plays at Mohawk. Austin Vida featured them recently and I am hoping, as Editor in Chief, that we garnered some new interest for them. I have always said that seeing live music during the week is the best time to really discover something new. Since Monday night football has not started yet, come out and join my friends and I at Mohawk.

Also tonight at Mohawk, is my friend Andrew's band called "Isle of White". He's been on me about coming to see them play and tonight it is finally going to happen. I haven't made a judgment on them yet, simply because I haven't seen them live. Either way, I'll have a cold one or two with Andrew.

Here's a look for you at Western Ghost House. It's a video that was shot for their Austin Vida feature, both filmed and written by my friend Ajay Miranda. For those of you who were out this weekend at Mohawk getting your face ripped off by The Sword, check out the drummer. He may look familiar to you.

Album Review: Another Link In The Chain by The Junction

Having already created some internet buzz in their home country of Canada, The Junction will surely create some indie buzz here stateside once they get a U.S. tour going. This indie trio from Brampton sounds s good as anything else making news in the indie world and has some real strong singles. A new video for their single “My Love Was There” was what first caught my attention. After enjoying that, I wanted the rest of their new album, Another Link In The Chain.

New Video for "Despues" by Hello Seahorse!

During South By Southwest this year, some of us at Austin Vida were fortunate enough to catch Mexico City's Indie darlings, Hello Seahorse!. We have reviewed their current album, Bestia, here on AustinVida.com and posted another one of their videos with it.The video for their second single, "Despues", hit YouTube on August 14th.It's a great single to check out if you are unfamiliar with Hello Seahorse!. "Despues" is in Spanish, but if you don't speak Spanish and like what you hear, many of their other tracks are in English. I expect major success from Hello Seahorse! world wide.

Meet The Morakestra on Austin Vida

I first saw The Morakestra last year. What I saw and heard was a group of talented young Latinos doing some fantastic indie rock worthy of everyone's ear. This year I reviewed their latest album, Witness To Connection, for Austin Vida. I thought it was solid album with only a few songs that made me go "huh?".

Originally from El Paso, the Austin based Morakestra is steadily becoming a regular Austin staple around Red River. When I got word of their CD release show, I made sure my Austin Vida team and I included The Morakestra on the website somehow. I am very happy with the way everything turned out. Ajay Miranda shot great video once again, and Sarah Vasquez gave us an insightful interview to help those unfamiliar with The Morakestra get acquainted.

Here is a YouTube video from the Austin Vida YouTube Channel that did not get published with the article that will give you an idea of The Morakestra's look and sound.

Album Review: Take It All In by The Steps

Here in Austin, there aren’t too many of us who aren’t familiar with The Steps. They are one of the most polished indie rock bands to come out of Austin. After having won last year’s ACL The Sound and The Jury contest at Antone’s, their national climb to fame is really getting started. Now with their recently released Take It All In EP, music listeners everywhere will get to hear why that is.

Free EP from Noise Beat Propaganda

Noise beat Propaganda is a four piece Indie-pop band from Mexicali, Baja California. We’re In Love, Yeah Right! is their new 4 track EP on Poni Republic. This EP is the reason I hate getting good EPs in the mail. They might as well rename EPs “teasers” because that’s what We’re In Love, Yeah Right! is.

Album Review: Bad Veins (self titled)

Bad Veins is two man indie band from Cincinnati, Ohio. Members Ben Davis (vocals, guitar, keys) and Sebastian Schulz (drums) have put together something that will draw them comparisons to the likes of The Killers and Franz Ferdinand. After listening to their upcoming self titled album, it is hard to believe there are only two of them. Their sound is much bigger than I expected after reading their bio.

Mark Your Calendars for Built By Snow on July 15th

One of my local favorites, Built By Snow, will be playing next week at Emo's inside stage. I haven't seen these dudes play for a while an shame on me. They are one of those stand out bands in a crowded Austin, Texas that has bands playing in every corner of downtown. Their latest album, Mega, is still one of my top ten album releases of the year so far. You can purchase it from their store front on Double Stereo. For those of you unfamiliar with Built By Snow or have never seen them live, you're missing out on a good time. To give you an idea of what they sound like, or who they sound like, just think 8 Bit Nintendo meets Weezer. Check them out for yourself here on this Insite Night Video my good friend Ajay shot recently:

Silver Sun Pick Ups Unplugged

One of last year's ACL performers, Silver Sun Pick Ups, have just gone Unplugged. The L.A. based indie rockers are on MTV Unplugged this week where you can check out the videos for "Catch and Release", "Panic Switch" and more. I miss the old MTV Unplugged series. I have mentioned that before in interviews and other blog posts. I'm glad to see these performances online and hope the Unplugged thing makes a comeback online if nothing else. Their Unplugged performance was taped at New York City's Nyehaus. Check out a clip of the Silver Sun Pick Up's Unplugged performance and listen for yourself:

Interview with Dear and the Headlights

I have another installment of my Warped Tour series leading up to our Double Stereo coverage for you. I sat down with a great featured band on this year’s Warped Tour, Dear and the Headlights. An energetic young indie band from Arizona, they came through Austin recently to talk about everything from performing at music festivals to winning over Paramore fans. When you need a break from all the awesome pop punk and screamo, check out Dear and the Headlights.

Interview With Murray Lightburn of The Dears

I recently saw Montreal indie rockers, The Dears, live in concert for the first time. Their live show is as polished and musically precise as their albums. The Dears were on tour supporting their latest album, Missiles. Lead singer, guitarist and keyboard player Murray Lightburn answers a few questions I had for him after seeing their show. I was surprised by some of his answers. He's a witty one that Murray.
