Here's Lincoln Park performing "Iredescent" at Red Square Park in Moscow. The performance was for the world premiere of Transformers: Dark Of The Moon.
I think this is the next vinyl album (or two) that I'm going to purchase. I found this group in my iTunes downloads from last year and am kicking myself for not having listened to Heavy Young Heathens earlier. The video I posted above debuted on MTV Hive last year and I never got a chance to post/share. Better late than never.
If you like what you hear, Heavy Young Heathens have free mp3s on their website here.
The best time and place to get it is at Waterloo Records before Wednesday, July 7th, at noon. Why? Alejandro Escovedo will be performing at Waterloo for FREE at noon. Be sure to also catch Escovedo on Wednesday night at 7:30pm at Zilker Park for Blues On The Green. That's also free. Given both events are free, the least you could do is buy the record.
I saw first saw The Dig this past spring with Portugal The Man at The Parish. They are great live. Their new full length album, Electric Toys, is finally out today so check it out and give it some consideration. If you like what you hear on the video posted above, head over to Red River Noise to read my review of Electric Toys and read an interview with The Dig also. Here are the links:
California based, Sleepy Sun, is band that is outside of my usual realm of taste to be honest. I mean I can do some indie stuff, but tend to like ambient indie or something angsty. This group bring s a little psychedelic flavor to some tracks and a little '60s garage rock sounds. Maybe when I listened to it for the first time today, I just happened to be in the right mood to listen to something like Sleepy Sun. Either way, I'm digging it and thought I'd show you one of their videos. For those in Austin, they are going to be at The Parish on September 18th. I know it's a ways' away, but it is something to look forward to. For now, pick up their new album Fever that came out today.
Here's a video of theirs' I saw on Pitchfork for their song "Open Eyes".
I interviewed Aussie grunge rockers, Violent Soho, recently for Red River Noise. These dudes remind of me bands like The Pixies, Nirvana and even early Weezer a little bit. I love this band. It is nice to see young twenty somethings do something other than samesy indie rock. These dudes were elementary when the music that influenced them was big. Hopefully this trend continues to keep bands doing something different. It will be interesting to see what kind of buzz they get after this summer's Lollapalooza Fest in Chicago. Read the interview here on Red River Noise:
So during SXSW, I try and check out as many international bands as I can. I don't get caught in the all the hype of the free booze hipster parties. I look for music or bands that I will only get a chance to see at SXSW. Everyone else as far as popular bands always make their way back around to Austin at some point so I don't sweat missing them at South By.
Well this past March during SXSW, my favorite new discovery, meaning a band even I hadn't yet learned about or heard of, was The Minutes from Dublin, Ireland. They are three piece Irish rock machine that resurrects the spirit of the 60s when rock and roll was raw. They took me by complete surprise by how good they were live and I can't wait for them to stamp a vinyl for me to add o my High Fidelity collection. Check out The Minutes here. Turn it up and listen loud!
I recently sat down with Jason Devore, lead singer of punk rock out Authority Zero. He's a great interview and totally approachable. After over ten years of doing Authority Zero, it was nice to see he hasn't lost his passion despite all the changes with the band and record industry over the years. We talked a little about that and the new upcoming album from Authority Zero coming out in June called Stories Of Survival. Read the full interview here:
I just published my new interview with San Antonio band, Nancy Silva Project. They just got signed recently and are one of my "bands to watch for" for 2010. They do make it to Austin on occasion and are worth checking out live. They look very dark and goth, maybe even metal-ish, but they are melodic modern rock that's ready for mainstream rock radio. Check out my interview with band on Austin Vida here:
Circa Survive just released a new tour video to hype up fans about their new Blue Sky Noise album that's due out April 20th. I look forward to hearing what the album sounds like. Circa Survive is actually coming to Austin to play at Stubb's on April 28th with Coheed and Cambria. You can purchase tickets here:
Here is the new cover art for the upcoming Gaslight Anthem album, American Slang, due out on June 15th. I know that's a ways away, but anything I can get from Gaslight Anthem is gold. I absolutely love this band. They posted a the new title track on their MySpace page.
Tomorrow when all the big music fest stuff starts, make sure to get up The Parlor North Loop for the best day party of your life! Some of my most talented writer and photographer friends are starting a new blog called "Red River Noise" and we're kicking it off with some a bang. Like a mixtape that never slows down, this line up is high energy. Form local heavy weights like Zlam Dunk and Bright Light Social Hour, to San Antonio sensation Hydra Melody and crazy touring acts, there is something for everyone cool.
So I saw this video on YouTube today and played the whole thing through at a high volume. Cincinnati based Foxy Shazam is coming to Austin for SXSW and I want to see them. Their self titled album comes out April 13th, so I have to see them live to get my Foxy fix.
On March 19th they will be performing at Stubb's for the Spin part with a full gospel choir. They are set to go on at 12:40pm. That same day they play the Crush MGMT showcase at Dirty Dog Bar. There they go on at 12:00am.
So this past weekend was all about getting down with Portugal The Man at The Parish. I knew they were going to be awesome because well, they are Portugal The Man. The biggest surprise of the night for my friends and I was the opening band, The Dig. I was caught by complete surprise. These dudes are ssssooooooo good live. Their album Electric Toys is definitely worth picking up. Here they are on stage joined by their tour mates, Port O'Brien. I'm not done talking about The Dig. I love this band, but I'll leave it at this short quick post for now.
I saw Zlam Dunk last night at The Parish. They opened up for Bright Light Social Hour. Talk about a killer line up! Zlam Dunk is one of my favorite local bands, local being out of San Marcos as they are Texas State students. Their fans are loyal, enthusiastic and wild. It totally reflects the spirit of the band. If I were a 20-something student, I'd want to be in that band. I'd want to be the hype man with the mic and tamborine. He looks like he has fun.
My good friends at Blastro are celebrating their tenth anniversary this Saturday at The Belmont. Blastro is an Austin based video production company that is responsible for all the great Ya'll Wire country vids and Roxwell videos you've seen online. They work with Austin Vida for big Latin events and shows, along with some 101X radio personalities for Roxwell. Their imprint on not only the Austin Music scene but the music scene everywhere has been made. Even before I got to know the crew over there, I was a fan of their website for their great live concert videos. If you haven't seen their videos yet, you're missing out on some great stuff.
Performing at The Belmont for Blastro will be Austin's own Alpha Rev. Their a good band for this event given the venue and their mass appeal to general audiences. In fact, the only live anything I've seen from Alpha Rev was on Rowell, which remember is the same people as Blastro. Rather than describe them this time, get the full Alpha Rev experience in this video Blastro filmed at La Zona Rosa.
So my favorite Free Week discovery this year was In Situ Sound. This is the kind of indie I like and I couldn't be happier that these dudes are here in Austin now. I'm hoping people get as excited about them as I have. Kudos to my girl Chantel Clopine for not only taking amazing photos, but also introducing me to the band.
Austin rockers, Vallejo, will be releasing their new Acoustica album this Saturday night at Saxon Pub. In case you hadn't really seen the poster above, you get a free CD with admission. How cool is that? More bands should do that. If you don't make it out Saturday, then Acoustica will be available to the public on the 26th. I know this isn't going to be all the blogger buzz, but anyone interested in Austin music and its history should check out Vallejo at least once as a right of passage.
I recently uploaded an interview I did for Double Stereo with a cool young band from New York called Lights Resolve. Maybe you caught them with The Used or saw them last year during SXSW. These dudes are good. I think they are going to step up their game this year and put out a hot record. Check out the interview:
Ian is a graduate of Round Rock High School and attended St Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. In 2008 he joined the team at Double Stereo (formerly CD Fuse) as their Blog editor where he reviewed concerts, albums, and did interviews for the popular music site.In January 2009, he became the Editor in Chief for Austin Vida. In 2010, with the help of some of his most talented friends, he launched Red River Noise. "Ian's Music Blog" is also one of the few blogs selected to be a Do512 All-Star.
On any given night of the week he can be found in downtown Austin on 6th Street and the Red River live music district.
