The Gaslight Anthem live clip from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

I never really watch Jimmy Fallon because he is so not funny, despite having The Roots as his house band. I do, however, check out the clips from his show from time to time on Hulu.Fallon just one cool point for this live clip from one of my favorite bands of all time, The Gaslight Anthem. They are one of the reasons to look forward to ACL this year.

Win Free Tickets to Pachanga Fest from Austin Vida

The big event is this Saturday at Fiesta Gardens. Pachanga is the it Latino event that happens in this Latin Music Month here in Austin. Pachanga is the only festival to feature Latino musicians of all music genres, where as in other cities they stick to one genre, typically just salsa, Tejano or Latin Alternative. With Pachanga Fest, you can hear great modern rock, punk, cumbia, Tejano, salsa and indie. It is a truly unique and memorable experience that everyone can enjoy.

That being said, my friends and I at Austin Vida are giving away tickets this week through our Austin Vida Facebook fan page. How dope would it be to go to one of the best music festivals in the country for free? It could happen. All you have to do is add or "like" Austin Vida on Facebook to get more details and be eligible to win. Add Austin Vida on Facebook here:

Friday Night Show Pick: Krum Bums at Emo's

The craziest show Friday night in Austin is easily the Krum Bums at Emo's. They are one of the best live punk rock shows ever to hit the Red River scene. They've been a band for over decade and haven't lost s step. This year during Free Week, they had a crazy show at Red 7 that our Red River Noise crew captured here in this video. It shows what a Krum Bums show is like and why you need to go to Emo's Friday night. Check it out.

RRN-TV: Krum Bums live at Red 7 from Red River Noise on Vimeo.

To learn more about the Krum Bums, my good friend Alysha Hernandez from Austin Vida interviewed the guys last year. Read the article here:

Also on the bill Friday night at are Hot Rails To Hell, Women In Prison and World Burns To Death. Emo's is located at 603 Red River. Doors at 9:00pm. Get there early and make it crazy night out. If you're an Austinite, it is a right of passage to see the Krum Bums at least once.

Can't Stop Thinking About Zlam Dunk!

I saw Zlam Dunk last night at The Parish. They opened up for Bright Light Social Hour. Talk about a killer line up! Zlam Dunk is one of my favorite local bands, local being out of San Marcos as they are Texas State students. Their fans are loyal, enthusiastic and wild. It totally reflects the spirit of the band. If I were a 20-something student, I'd want to be in that band. I'd want to be the hype man with the mic and tamborine. He looks like he has fun.

1/27/10 Wednesday show pick: Anti-Flag & Cancer Bats at Red 7

This Wednesday at Red 7 brings "The Economy Sucks Tour" featuring Trash Talk, Aiden, Cancer Bats and Anti-Flag. That's a pretty good bill and should make for a killer Wednesday night. I'd be lying to you if I said I was absolutely crazy about any of these bands, but they are worth seeing live.

I'm stoked more than anything about Cancer Bats actually, as I saw them briefly one SXSW and have always wanted to catch a full set from them at some point. Aiden is decent and I am not into Trash Talk, but only because I've never gave their music an honest listen.

The show's headliner, Anti-Flag, is a band I've liked for a few years now. Their a Warped Tour band, and anyone that knows me can tell you I don't mind being the old dude at Warped every summer. In fact, this past summer I was at Warped in San Antonio and got to meet Chris 2 of Anti-Flag. I didn't have an interview scheduled or anything, but we did get to chat and we liked a lot of the same punk bands. I missed their set at Warped because I was in the media tent pretty much all day, so I'm glad to get the chance to see them Wednesday.

Here's an old video from Anti-Flag for a song called "This Is The End (For You My Friend)". Most of my non-punk rock loving friends know this song because it was featured on Madden (video game) back in the day. I still like it. Give it a listen.

A Look Back at Death at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009

Me with Death at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 in Austin, Texas

The biggest reason to be excited for me at this past Fun Fun Fun Fest was not Danzig or The Sword, but the resurrection of the iconic punk rock group Death. Seeing them live felt like being in a time warp. They were punk before punk was genre. Think Stooges getting Jimmy Hendrix as a lead singer. It's something like that. Anyway, as I was surfing around YouTube tonight I came across the live video that I have been waiting for since the festival ended. Here's the live video of Death performing "Politicians In My Eyes" at Fun Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009.

Wednesday Night Show Pick: Born To Lose at Red 7 w/Capital Scam

Born To Lose is one of my all time favorite punk bands. It is still hard to believe as good as they are that I still get to see them at Red 7 on Wednesday. Their sound is so gutter, raw but yet polished, and worthy of a mid to high level Warped Tour stage. I have been to many a Warped Tours and three fourths of the bands there don't hold a candle to Born To Lose. I even saw Born To Lose play Warped a few years ago in front of a small but satisfied crowd. Seeing them live is like reliving my early twenties all over again.

They have been a Red River staple for years now. The reason you only see their name in show listings every so often if that much of their time is spent kicking ass and taking names in Europe, a much better place for punk bands from what I hear. Everyone who loves punk that I have shared their music with has always become a big fan. When they played at Emo's this summer with Gallows, the crowd loved them. People saw me singing along to the words during the whole show, which prompted them to approach me after and ask questions about them. "Who are these guys again?" "Are they local?" "Can you send me some MP3s?"

Born To Lose

Their current album, Saints Gone Wrong, is in regular rotation in my truck's CD player. People new to Born To Lose need to pick that up first as it is their best. If you really want to get into Born To Lose, pick up Blessed Days. The recording and sound quality isn't as good as on Saints Gone Wrong, but the songs are phenomenal. In fact my favorite Born To Lose song is on Blesses Days, a song called "Borrowed Time".

Tonight Born To Lose takes the stage with any great local punk band called Capital Scam. I have seen these guys around, I believe most recently at The Broken Neck skate park. Tonight's show is also serving as Capital Scam's tour kick off show. Expect nothing but their A-game as always. I suggest arriving at Red 7 around 9:00. Red 7 is located on 611 E. 7th, right off I-35 and adjacent to the uber hipster Beauty Bar. I couldn't find anything that mentioned the cover charge, but it can't be more than ten dollars.

For some punk rock goodness or to check out Born To Lose for the first time, take a look and listen to this video for "Saints Gone Wrong".

Krum Bums: A Decade Later The Punk Don't Stop

The Krum Bums live at Red 7 on August 14, 2009 (Bob Kinney)

My friend and Austin Vida Staff Writer, Alysha Hernadez, just published one of the best Krum Bums interviews I have read in recent memory. I have always been a big punk rock fan as many of you may know, but I'm also a long time Krum Bums fan. A staple in Austin and at Red 7, they continue on playing headlining shows here. On August 14th, they played thier CD release show for the new EP. I'll talk more about that later. You know I got my hands on one. I wish I could have made it to that show, but I was in San Antonio covering Mayhem Fest. I'll catch them when they get home from tour.

By the way, here is the set list from that CD release show at Red 7:

Finally! Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 Lineup Announced!

Looks like I'll be alternating between the Black and Blue Stages this year. I'm stoked about Death, Pack of Wolves, GZA, The Cool Kids, The Riverboat Gamblers, Pharcyde and Danzig! I am stoked about Danzig! I'm going to go play some Luciferi right now after playing "Mother" on Guitar Hero.

This year's Fun Fun Fun Fest takes place on November 7th & 8th at Waterloo Park. Other than maybe Pachanga Fest, this is my favorite festival in town. The flyer doesn't mention it, but do bring your boards if you skate. There's always half pipes during FFFun Fest and other cool stuff going on. I love this town.

For more info, visit the Official Fun Fun Fun Fest website at:

Joe Strummer Birthday Bash at Flamingo Cantina Saturday!

This Saturday night at The Flamingo Cantina is a Joe Strummer Birthday Bash put on by Conexion Rockera and is my Saturday pick. Yes, you can still catch this show after Bat Fest to keep the party going. If Bat Fest isn't for you, this is your show.

There are some cool bands on the bill, but the real treat for me is Austin punk rockers, The Sweethearts (pictured above). I have seen them a few times, both Emo's and Stubb's indoor. Their style of punk is reminiscent of early No Doubt with more of an edge. I think even the casual punk fan would dig The Sweethearts. Give them a listen on their Myspace. I have some info and links for you below on the other bands on the bill as well. Happy Birthday Joe Strummer!

Visit The Sweethearts on Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/sweethearts

Clampdown is a Joe Strummer/The Clash tribute band. I haven't seen them live yet, so I'm curious to see or hear what they sound like.

The Jungle Rockers are a garage rock band from right here in Austin, Texas. I have seen their name listed plenty of times walkign down Red River. The Austin Chronicle and Austin Sound have shown The Jungle Rockers some love before. From what I heard on their Myspace, it sounds very 1950s greaser, Rat Fink era rock. It's not my usual musical preference but it isn't bad. I'm glad to see people keeping that sound alive and well.

Death to play Fun Fun Fun Fest!!!!!!!

Pictured above is supposedly the only known photo of the band, Death. I have been watching Fun Fun Fun Fest online because it is my favorite Austin music festival, although Pachanga this past year certainly has me rethinking that. I look forward to seeing Jesus Lizard and GZA from the Wu Tang Clan, but Fun Fun Fun Fest is best known for resurrecting great punk-mod-ska acts of the past. Death is apparently this year's resurrection. Having only heard the name before, I of course looked them up on Myspace and took a couple of things for this post. It's very Stooges meets a soulful Jimmy Hendrix. Here's the bio:

On February 9th, 1964 in Detroit Earl Hackney Sat Down his three sons: David (age 12), Dannis (pronounced Dennis) age 10, and Bobby (age 8) in front of the TV set and told them they were witnessing something special. The Beatles were playing on the Ed Sullivan show, and David, entranced, sat 6” from the screen wide-eyed, while the other two sat equally mesmerized. The very next day, David found a guitar in the alley, took it home, and taught himself how to play. By 1970, the brothers had started their first band and begun playing garage shows. They played funk/R&B, influenced by the Motwon sounds coming out of their East Detroit neighborhood. They Practived relentlessly and home recorded often. In early 1973, the brothers went to the Michigan palace and saw a perfomrmance of Iggy and The Stooges. From that day forward David moved the band into the direction of rock n’ roll, feeling it was a better fit for them. David wrote the music and Bobby wrote the lyrics. Their songs became more political and the power trio seemed complete. The band named themselves Death. With more garage shows and a demo under their belt, David opened up the yellow pages to recording studios and threw a dart. The dart landed on Groovesville Productions, a label owned and operated by Don Davis. Davis, impressed with the band, brought the demo to the attentio of Clive Davis of Columbia Records. CLive gave Death an advance and crontracts were drawn to begin recording a 12 song album. After recording the first 7 songs, Clive insisted that the band change their name before the album was completed. David and his brothers refused, causing Columbia and Groovesville to back out of the deal. However, with thier received advance, Death leaked out 500 copies of a 45 on their own Tryangle Records in 1976 which was distributed at garage shows for free. Nothng more was heard of Death over the coming years other than a few collectors who had raved about their legendary 45. In 2002, an obscure punk compilation titled No One Left To Blame featured the B Side "Keep On Knockin’. Six years afterwards, Bobby Hackney’s sons caught wind of the 45 songs being played at parties in California. Bobby hackney then brought the 34 year old master tapes down from the attic for his sons to hear. Finally, a deal with Drag City Records was worked out to release the album on February 17TH 2009. …FOR THE WHOLE WORLD TO SEE!!!"

I ordered mine the minute I saw the video and heard their music online. I can't wait for this historic opportunity to see Death at Fun Fun Fun Fest. Kudos to the Transmission people for making this happen. Last year was Bad Brains and Dead Milkmen, this year Death!

Vans Warped Tour Compilation 2009

One of the things I look forward to every summer when the Warped Tour comes around is their annual Warped Tour Compilation album. This year’ s compilation, which feature’s NOFX’s Fat Mike on the cover, is one of the more diverse Warped Compilations to date. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it is the best of the series, but it is a must own for anyone who is going or went to Warped Tour this year.

The Swellers now on Fueled By Ramen

One of my favorite lesser known bands whose album I've reviewed, The Swellers, are now signed to Fueled By Ramen. It came as a little bit of a surprise to me, but it was certainly a good move for both parties. I thought The Sellers might have been a little too hard core or punk to be on Fueled By Ramen, but whatever. The Swellers have been playing small shows at Red 7 and dives all over the country for a while now. They have paid their dues and totally deserve it. Gone are the days when I could see them for five to seven bucks at the door. I'm sure with their new album due out in the fall, which I can't wait to get a hold of, they will be opening for a major touring act. That's why you have to go check out and support the Red River venues folks, because you never know who you will discover.

Here's the YouTube video The Swellers have promoting their new addition to Fueled By Ramen:

NOFX Backstage Passport DVD Review

As I gear up for this year’s Warped Tour, I watched the DVDs from the Fuse hit series, NOFX Backstage Passport. I watched almost every episode of the series when it aired last year. In fact, that is most television I watched all year in one sitting. I thought the concept was brilliant. I couldn’t wait to see the train wreck and debauchery set to the music of NOFX. The guys played shows South America, Asia, Israel, Russia and South Africa with nothing but hope and their instruments. After watching this series, I am even more bummed I don't get to see them live again in San Antonio this Thursday. Oh well, I have five NOFX shows under my belt to go off of for now.

Album Review: Prototypes And Painkillers by Strung Out

Prototypes and Painkillers is the latest release from Strung Out, one of my favorite punk rock bands and Warped Tour memories. An unconventional release of sort, Prototypes and Painkillers is a twenty five track album. Seven of which are previously unreleased while eleven, according to the info I received from Fat Wreck Chords, were out of print. It took me a bit to really listen to it all and absorb it all. Having all of Strung Out’s previous seven albums in my personal collection, I went back and listened to them all before reviewing Prototypes and Painkillers. It wasn't that doing so would make any difference for the review, I just felt like listening to them.

I'm Going To Warped Tour!!

Yup, I'm living out one of my childhood dreams this year. As usual I am heading down to San Antonio for Warped Tour, only this year as official Wapred Tour approved press. I have been going to Warped Tour since I was in high school only a few moons ago, but never as press. Now although I don't enjoy this new era of Warped Tour as much as I did in the late 90s, there is always some great new younger acts to be discovered. This year, I'm stoked that I will get to see bad Religion live again. I think it was the 90s when I last saw them live. I am also looking forward to hip hop act Shad and reconnecting with Fueled By Ramen artist, Versaemerge.

In the meantime, I will be posting Warped Tour themed reviews and interviews on Double Stereo in anticipation of the San Antonio tour stop. After my day in the hot sun at Warped, I will keep you all posted as to what to expect from my day at Warped Tour. For now, I share with you a video for my favorite Bad Religion song of all time, "Sorrow".

Album Review: Underneath The Owl by The Riverboat Gamblers

Austin’s The Riverboat Gamblers have been a punk rock staple on the Red River scene in Austin for a few years now. I always enjoyed their shows at Red 7 and their music was pretty intense. Not long after my first Riverboat Gamblers show, I heard them on one of my Madden video games. I just knew bigger things were on the brink for them. Today, with the recent release of Underneath The Owl, the band is more than ready for the next level. They are the next level. (Photo by Gary Copeland)

New Myspace Profile for Zlam Dunk

Gwizsk Design (GKDN) just launched a rad new profile for Austin's own, Zlam Dunk. The profile was designed with an 80s color scheme of neon pink, white and blue. It is the same colors used on the 80s skate board classic, Thrashin. If you haven't heard of Zlam Dunk or seen their show, check out their calendar while you're checking out the new Myspace page. Make sure to come to their EP release party on May 29th at Stubb's here Austin.

As an added bonus, here's a video my friend Ajay shot of Zlam Dunk when they played The Dirty Dog. His blog, "NITES, is a great source of video performances of the Austin music scene. Check out the video here:
